Note that these packages have different names in Wheezy:

      fonts-arphic-gbsn00lp
      fonts-arphic-gkai00mp
      etc

These and other fonts are in a section called ‘Fonts’ in Wheezy.

How to set default browser in Debian

You need to point the symlink /etc/alternatives/x-www-browser to /usr/bin/[your browser] or other path where your browser is installed. One easy way to do this is to execute the following command as root:

    update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

How to add entries to sudoers

Edit the file /etc/sudoers. Note that the file is read-only (even for su). You only need to use :w! in vi to force-write.

    # /etc/sudoers

    1. This file MUST be edited with the ‘visudo’ command as root.
    2. See the man page for details on how to write a sudoers file.
    3. Defaults env_reset
    1. Host alias specification

    User_Alias MYADMINS = jdoe

    1. User alias specification
    1. Cmnd alias specification

    Cmnd_Alias SHUTDOWN = /sbin/shutdown, /sbin/reboot, /sbin/halt
    Cmnd_Alias PKGMGMT = /usr/bin/dpkg, /usr/bin/apt-get, /usr/bin/aptitude

    1. User privilege specification
    1. Users listed above (MYADMINS) can run package managers and reboot the system.

    MYADMINS ALL = PKGMGMT, SHUTDOWN

    1. Users in the group wheel can execute any command impersonating any user.

    #%wheel ALL= ALL

    #Default rule for root.
    root ALL=(ALL) ALL

Locked dpkg and Freezing Synaptic Manager

One possible cause of the freezing synaptic manager is that the /var/lib/dpkg program is currently locked by another process. Remember that the management of packages on Debian or Ubuntu Linux is exclusive.

If restarting the computing does not fix the problem, try this:

    sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock

This command effectively discovers and removes current process(s) that owns the lock to dpkg. Now run a configuration to dpkg:

    sudo dpkg –configure -a

this command re-configures all the broken packages.

Finally it is safe to run package upgrade:

    sudo aptitude upgrade
